........................About
Us:
WRAHS was established in the fall of 1997 after three
years of extensive research of alternative high schools
in the United States. The school is a reflection of the
philosophy that recognizes the fact that one system of
education does not benefit all students. It is based
upon the belief that there are many ways to educate students
and that there are many types of environments in which
that can occur. The school is founded upon four basic
beliefs. One, that a small student population is critical
to the success of the program. Two, that both the academic
and emotional aspects of the students must be addressed.
Three, that the school must be viewed as a supportive
environment. Four, that the school must be perceived
by the students and parents as a community.
WRAHS
is located within Washburn Rural High School in the Auburn-Washburn
school district. All
classrooms are
located in an open area of 5,586 square feet. WRAHS has
a staff of eight consisting of: principal, counselor, science
teacher, math teacher, English teacher, social studies
teacher, counselor’s aide/work study and internship
coordinator, and secretary. The student capacity is 60
students per unit.
All courses at WRAHS are aligned with the main school
courses and satisfy all the graduation requirements of
USD 437. Courses at WRAHS are offered every three weeks
for a total of 12 units of study per year. Offering the
courses in smaller increments allows for greater flexibility
and creativity on the part of the faculty and staff, allows
the students to get the specific courses they need in order
to graduate, and is a way to offer more immediate feedback
and reinforcement to the students on how they are doing
academically.
Students
attending WRAHS are required to meet the same graduation
requirements as students attending the main
school. Additionally, WRAHS students must complete 20 hours
of community service at a non-profit organization and
be certified in CPR and first aide. Students completing
the required
credits and the additional WRAHS requirements receive
a diploma
from the main school and are given the opportunity to graduate
in the same ceremony in May.
